Bernard
Lefevre was one of those rare students, everybody
liked
him. A member of the Athenians, Bernie was smart,
caring, a great
practical joker and an avid surfer, a love he shared
with his sister,
Diane '63. Bernard Lefevre in his own quiet way left
a lasting
impression on all those who knew him at NHHS.
After college, Bernie earned his Navy helicopter
pilot's wings and served with distinction in two
tours of Vietnam. A month before he was to return
home, flying another rescue mission into the Mekong
Delta to pick up eight men trapped under enemy fire,
Bernie's chopper was hit in mid air and all were
lost. Awarded the Silver Star, Bernard Lefevre is
buried in a military cemetery overlooking the ocean
in San Diego. On Memorial Day 2003, Marina Bryant
'62 placed the tribute you see above at The Wall
in Washington D.C. in memory of her friend and classmate.
